It’s time to say goodbye to the winter blahs. Why not put an end to your winter hibernation by making some simple changes to your home’s interior and exterior that will help brighten your mood?
When you think spring, what images come to mind? For most, it’s pastel colours, spring flowers, bunnies, lightweight fabrics and garments, and so on. Take your imagination and see how many ways you can transform your space for spring.
Spring-Cleaning
No matter how good a housekeeper you are, decor and shelves collect dust. Spring-cleaning will help you address the dust and tend to any winter clutter that’s accumulated.
Take your spring-cleaning a step further by changing some of the fabrics and decor in your home and at your front entryway to make it more inspiring.
Pack up Winter Decor
First, it’s time to remove the last remnants of any holiday décor still haunting your outdoors and indoor rooms. Face the fresh spring air, and take down any outdoor holiday garlands, wreaths, bows, lights, and so on that are still hanging. Put them away for next winter, perhaps to a self storage if you don’t have any room at home.
Then, travel through your indoor spaces in search of any holiday decor or wintery-looking items still on display. Maybe there’s a Santa soap dispenser and Christmas tree hand towels still in your washroom. Maybe you have cranberry, cinnamon and pine scented candles still strewn about. Perhaps a neglected spindly looking poinsettia plant is still taking up prime countertop real estate. Put the salvageable items away and toss the others.
Add In a Touch of Spring Decor
Freshen your now cleaned-off porch or entryway with a touch of spring decor. It may be too early to add a pot of real plants, but pots of artificial flowers and door decorations can be very welcoming.
Indoors, change out your bathroom soap dispensers for those with fresh spring scents. Replace your holiday plants with new colourful succulents or spring arrangements.
Change Your Fabrics
Now’s the time to put away heavy throws, seasonal toss cushions and dark coloured tablecloths exchanging them for those of brighter colours. Springtime begs for crisp and airy whites, pastels and florals.
It may sound drastic, but tab-top drapery panels are easy to change and usually affordable. You might want to replace heavy or dark-coloured draperies with lighter weight white or coloured draperies.
If it’s not too costly, consider adding a little spring and summer pep to your bedroom with new colourful bedding. If you choose bedding and draperies that match the existing wall colour, you’ll transform the room without even having to repaint it.
Makeover Your Hall Closet
Making simple changes to your decor will help give your winter blues the boot. And speaking of boots, as long as the threat of snow is past, why not clean and put away your winter boots, coats, gloves and scarves. Out of sight is out of mind.
Wash the floor space the boots used to occupy and dig out your spring and summer shoes so they’re ready when you need them. Move your winter coats to the back of the closet, and bring forward spring jackets and coats.
Change Your Mood
Most everyone craves new motivation after a long winter. Spring air and bright sunshine will perk up most everyone’s mood. And on rainy spring days, the simple changes you’ve made to your living environment will keep your spirits bright and your house top notch.
